The South African adventure lives on for Canada’s Jebb
Sinclair. The London Irish back-row has extended his time on loan to the
Stormers Super Rugby organization. The former Atlantic Rock forward impressed
in over a half-dozen games with the Stormers on either side of Canada’s summer
international tests in 2012. With some of the Stormers’ more talented Super
Rugby stars having been called up to the Springboks for the new Southern
Hemisphere Rugby Championship tournament, the rest have returned to their clubs
for the Currie Cup, the county’s national provincial competition.
Upon the completion of Sinclair’s Super Rugby obligations, he was contacted by Western Province, one of three Currie Cup teams in South Africa’s Western Cape region. National team call-ups had left the club’s back-row dangerous depleted, and the New Brunswick native was offered the opportunity to fill the void, while the pre-season was in-session back in England.
We spoke to Jebb Sinclair about his new opportunity and how it came about:
“After the Super 15 season the Western Cape teams still had quite of few injuries and were going to end up losing a few forwards to the Bok squad for most of the Currie Cup season, so they approached me to see if I’d like to stay. I checked in with London Irish to see if that would fit in with their plans at all, and as its still preseason there, I will only really miss about six games and arrive at around the same time I did last year after the World Cup.
The plan is still to return to London when the loan is over. Obviously at the beginning of the season everyone is healthy and there is lots of depth, so by the time I get there hopefully I can help bolster the squad and fill in anywhere that they will need me.
I’m very excited to be staying in Cape Town for another three months. Hopefully I’ll catch a bit of the South African summer near the end, but more importantly I’ll be able to help Western Province win the Currie Cup.
Unlike Super 15 when you play teams from Australia and New Zealand all the games are derby games and are played with tons of physicality and passion, so I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to these games. So far, playing at Newlands in Capetown has been an awesome experience and I just wanted to keep it going!”
Sinclair will start at #8 for Western Province this weekend in Currie Cup action in an extension of the experience which has made him one of Canada’s most accomplished professionals. His continued development comes alongside a flurry of new signings for this country’s athletes; such as those involving Taylor Paris (Glasgow Warriors) and Phil Mackenzie (London Welsh), both of whom will be playing top-tier professional rugby this season in Europe.
